Temperatures in parts of Lincolnshire, East Anglia and the Home Counties were on their way to rising above 23 degrees Celsius on Wednesday afternoon, well above the early April average and making it the warmest day of the year so far.

It will be less warm on Thursday and Friday but still above average, and Saturday should rise into the twenties in places again.

For the Grand National it should be a fine day in Liverpool with warm sunshine and a gentle south-easterly breeze, pushing temperatures up to at least 20 degrees at Aintree.

Between now and then it will be essentially dry, with any drizzle on Thursday barely sufficient to dampen the turf.

It is possible, therefore, that there will be further watering of the course to ensure that the going remains good and does not firm up too much.
