Unusually strong winds for this time of year are set to batter the north of the UK on Monday as a rapidly deepening low pressure system arrives from the northern Atlantic.

Gale force south-westerly winds will affect much of central and southern Scotland together with Northern Ireland and northernmost England. Winds are likely to gust up to 60-70mph quite widely in these areas and some exposed coasts and hills could even see gusts in excess of 80mph, easily enough to bring down trees in places.

Much of the UK will also have a spell of rain during the day. Unfortunately, where the rain is much needed, in southeast England, amounts are likely to be woefully low; probably only 1 or 2mm at most.

Thankfully, during Monday evening, the winds will gradually calm down. Indeed, by the middle of the week winds will be much lighter, with some warm sunshine over southern and eastern parts of the UK.
